Officials directed to prevent road accidents

District Collector V Prasanna Venkatesh directed the officials concerned to take special drives to curb road accidents and create awareness on wearing helmets by two-wheeler raiders.

The Collector held a meeting here on Wednesday in which SP Mary Prashanthi and deputy transport commissioner S Santhakumari participated.

Speaking on the occasion, Collector prevent road accidents said that reports indicate that most of the deaths of two-wheeler riders in road accidents are due to non-wearing of helmets and asked the officials to create full awareness about wearing helmets among the two-wheeler raiders.

One month’s time should be given for the two-wheelers to wear helmets, he told the officials stating that special drives should be conducted continuously and enforcement measures should be tightened to implement the rules to check fatal road accidents.

Collector Prasanna Venkatesh said that by the next meeting, the officials should estimate the decrease of road accident deaths as a result of the measures taken. In the same way, special drives should be conducted on drunk and driving and there should be no compromise in this matter.

Regarding drunk and driving, especially truck and lorry drivers should be identified and strict action should be taken against such drivers, the Collector instructed the officials. The Collector asked the officials to conduct counseling on LMV driving rules and also directed them to ensure that there is no overload in the auto rickshaws.

The officials should submit a report on the measures taken to curb road accidents on the national highways and state highways, he asked the officials and directed them to submit a report on the steps taken to resolve the problems which were discussed in the previous meeting of the Road Safety Committee.

“Instead of supplying water to the plants through tankers, measures should be taken to provide water to the plants by using drip on top of the national highway divider”, the Collector told the officials, He warned that the officials of action if road accidents are taken place due to water tankers used to watering the plants on dividers.

District SP Mery Prashanthi directed the officials to provide the details of where lighting is required on the national highway. Similarly, steps should be taken to install necessary signboards at the black spots, she told them, adding that Joint inspections should be conducted to take all necessary measures to reduce deaths due to road accidents.

Police, Transport, Engineering, Health Department officials should know the causes for road accidents through the Integrated Road Accident Database (IRAD) and take preventive measures. Drunk and drive checks should be conducted extensively in the district.

RTO K Srihari, Municipal Commissioner S Venkatakrishna, DCH Dr. AVR Mohan, DEO Shyam Sundar, DMHO Dr. Nageswara Rao and other officials were present.
