Olivia Munn has revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy, thanking her doctors and encouraging fans to perform their own risk assessments. “I am lucky. We caught it in enough time for me to have options. I wish the same for every woman who may have to face this one day,” the 43-year-old actor wrote on Instagram, alongside photographs and video of herself being treated at a hospital.
Olivia stated that she took a genetic test in February 2023 that tested for 90 distinct cancer genes and came out negative on all of them. Nonetheless, her doctor chose to calculate her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score, which “saved my life,” she stated.
Olivia received imaging tests followed by a biopsy, which revealed she had an aggressive form of cancer in both breasts. She underwent a double mastectomy 30 days after the biopsy and has had four surgeries in the last ten months. She explained that she kept it private because “I needed to catch my breath and get through some of the hardest parts before sharing.”
She praised her family and friends, particularly her partner, comedian John Mulaney, “for being there before I went into each surgery and being there when I woke up, always placing framed photos of our little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”
Olivia was a correspondent for Jon Stewart’s Daily Show, and her film credits include Magic Mike, The Predator, Office Christmas Party, and X-Men: Apocalypse.
