All India Majlis-e-ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asadauddin Owaisi on Tuesday defeated Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Kompella Madhavi Latha to secure the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat for the fifth time.
Owaisi defeated Madhavi Latha by a margin of 3,38,087 votes; the AIMIM president secured 6,61, 981 votes whereas his BJP counterpart secured 3,23,894 votes. Owaisi has been the Hyderabad MP since 2004.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, he defeated BJP’s Bhavant Rao by 2,82,186 votes. As compared to the previous Lok Sabha elections, Owaisi secured 55,901 more votes this time. In 2014 too, the AIMI president defeated Rao to retain the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat.
It is to be noted that Hyderabad has been a stronghold of the AIMIM for four decades. Asaduddin’s father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi was elected to Parliament in 1984-1989 as an independent candidate. He then represented the constituency as a leader of the AIMIM from 1989 -2004.
Following his victory, Owaisi said, “I would like to thank the people as they have given success to Majlis for the fifth time. I would like to thank the people of Hyderabad, especially the youth, women, and first-time voters…who have given a historic success to the AIMIM party.”
