Following the formation of the new government by the Congress in Telangana, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has announced free bus rides for women from Saturday (December 9). However, on Friday, people were eager to try out the free RTC bus rides even before the D-day arrived.
On Friday, one could witness a majority of RTC buses crammed with people, especially women, since 9 am. This can showcase people’s enthusiasm in trying out free RTC bus rides. But on the flip side, the situation has turned pathetic, including for those who always commute by buses. The women’s section in RTC buses are completely jammed with passengers of various age groups leaving no place left to stand. They also tend to occupy some part of male seats leaving no space for them to stand. On the other hand, the bus conductors and drivers are eager to collect money from passengers by making more people board the buses, especially women without limit.
Chandrika, a degree student said, “It is very rare to see such a rush during the early morning hours. I can’t even stand comfortably during the whole bus ride. Several woman passengers are pushing or fighting for seats despite there being no space to sit or stand.”
Ramana, a senior citizen said, “With the announcement of free RTC bus rides, people are so eager to try them out even before it has come into effect. It is a good manifesto for those who belong to the poor but not for rich and middle class families, especially for women. For middle class families, to a certain level, it can aid but not much. For the poor, it is like a lottery for them to get free bus rides for months, but it is not the case for the rest.”
