Petition filed in SC seeking barrage across Krishna River

Must read

In a significant development, a write petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, advocating for decisive measures from the government to construct a barrage across the Krishna River at the proposed iconic cable bridge site.
Supreme Court Advocate-on-Record, D Siva Rami Reddy, filed the writ petition, emphasising the critical need for a barrage in addition to the proposed cable iconic bridge. The petitioner contends that solely constructing a cable bridge may not effectively address the pressing issues related to drinking water and irrigation in the drought-prone Rayalaseema region.
‘Kundu Porata Samiti’, led by its convener Kamani Venugopal Reddy, has been actively at the forefront of the movement, advocating for the construction of a barrage in conjunction with the Iconic bridge. Recognizing the significance of water resource management in the region, the petition urges the government to consider the broader implications of water scarcity and take comprehensive measures.
The petition highlights that the proposed Iconic cable bridge, while visually iconic, may fall short of meeting the fundamental needs of the Rayalaseema region, known for its arid conditions and water-related challenges. The inclusion of a barrage, as advocated in the petition, is seen as crucial for addressing both drinking water and irrigation requirements.
