Reaffirming the State government’s commitment to strengthening irrigation infrastructure, Water Resources Minister Dr. Nimmala Ramanaidu on Tuesday announced that the Left Main Canal of the Polavaram Project would be completed by June. The canal, a pivotal link between the Godavari and Vamsadhara rivers, is expected to boost agricultural prospects in Uttarandhra. A budgetary provision of Rs 6,500 crore has been allocated for the project.

During a review meeting at the Vizianagaram Collectorate and a site visit to the Tarakarama Thirtha Sagar Barrage, the Minister noted that 90 per cent of the barrage work has been completed. Once commissioned, it will cater to the drinking water needs of Vizianagaram and serve the proposed Bhogapuram Airport.

Dr. Ramanaidu came down heavily on the previous administration, accusing it of derailing irrigation projects, which he claimed led to losses of over Rs 50,000 crore for farmers. He assured that pending land acquisition and rehabilitation concerns at Kumili and Saripalli would be resolved within two months.

Addressing concerns raised by Rajam MLA Kondru Murali over underutilisation of irrigation infrastructure, the Minister warned of stringent action against negligent contractors and officials. He instructed department heads to expedite Operation and Maintenance (O&M) proposals and maintain regular communication with local MLAs regarding project updates.

Discussions also covered measures such as weed clearance, silt removal, and canal lining at the Madduvalasa reservoir, with drone-based spraying recommended to improve operational efficiency. Dr. Ramanaidu also reviewed interstate matters linked to the Janjhavathi Reservoir Project, and issues affecting the Vattigedda and Gajapathinagaram canals.

District Collector Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and senior engineers of the Water Resources Department were present during the review. Concluding the meeting, the Minister reiterated the government’s unwavering resolve to transform Andhra Pradesh into a drought-free State by completing all key irrigation projects on schedule.
