Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has said that the state government has been releasing fishlings into tanks and ponds across Telangana to encourage fishermen. The fishlings were released into Palair reservoir and other water bodies across the state for the benefit of fishermen.
The Revenue Minister was taking part as the chief guest in the release of the fishlings provided with 100 per cent government subsidy.
He was speaking after releasing fishlings into Palair reservoir, along with Khammam MP Raghuram Reddy, Additional Collector P Srija, Irrigation Development Corporation chairman Muvva Vijay Babu, Telangana Fisheries Federation Chairman Mettu Sai Kumar as part of his tour of Kusumanchi mandal of Khammam district.
The fishermen wanted another five lakh fishlings and prawn seedlings to be released into Palair reservoir, he said, adding that he would go through their request and release the fishlings as per the full capacity of the reservoir.
In the flash floods that devastated Khammam rural mandal, the nets of fishermen and boats had been washed away. The government would soon come to the rescue of the fishermen on a war-footing.
Objective of the government is to bring smiles on the faces of the poor, he said, adding that he would make arrangements for providing shops to fishermen to sell fish adjacent to highways.
The government paid compensation to the owners of houses damaged due to floods, he said.
MP Raghuram Reddy said that seven lakh fishlings had been released into Palair reservoir spread over an area of 1,700 hectares. The Revenue Minister directed the officials to take steps to release six lakh more fishlings in the reservoir and also the prawn seedlings.
