Rail infra development need of the hour in Vizag

Must read

35 trains redirected through Duvvada station weekly due to platform shortages and operational delays.
The bustling city of Visakhapatnam, the largest in the State, finds itself grappling with significant challenges in its railway infrastructure development. Despite the city’s burgeoning population and the consistent demand for travel, constraints such as limited platforms and extensive delays at Visakhapatnam station have forced the diversion of trains to Duvvada station. However, proposed solutions seem to be caught in the web of governmental negligence, exacerbating the city’s transportation woes.
The current situation underscores the pressing need for infrastructure upgrades in Visakhapatnam’s railway network. With up to 35 trains redirected through Duvvada station weekly due to platform shortages and operational delays, the inefficiency at Visakhapatnam station is glaring. Railway officials attribute this diversion to the station’s inadequate platforms and the time-consuming engine change process, which often exceeds 20 minutes per train.
Efforts to address these issues have been stymied by bureaucratic hurdles and governmental inaction. Proposals for the development of the bulb line, an elevated corridor near Vizag railway station, and Marripalem station offer potential solutions, but progress has been sluggish. The envisioned South Coast Railway Zone, crucial for regional development, remains unrealised, primarily due to governmental neglect.
Senior officials at the Waltair Division strongly opined that if implemented, the railway zone could alleviate strain on Visakhapatnam’s infrastructure and facilitate smoother operations. However, obstacles such as land acquisition challenges, particularly the reluctance of the port to allocate space for bulb line development, impede progress. Despite this setback, Marripalem station emerges as a viable alternative, albeit with its own set of challenges.
The failure to seize opportunities for infrastructure enhancement reflects poorly on the government’s priorities. Allegations of land misallocation further exacerbate the situation, with claims of stealthy maneuvers by the Vaikapa government to secure land for the South Coast Railway Zone. The revelation of unutilised allotted land in Mudasarlova exposes the extent of governmental negligence, depriving the state of potential economic benefits and employment opportunities.
According to Konda Kamlakar Rao, a retired officer from the Indian Railways, the ramifications of governmental negligence reach far beyond mere infrastructure challenges, directly affecting the livelihoods of citizens. The hindrance of railway projects not only leads to a loss of job opportunities but also highlights the extensive consequences of bureaucratic inertia. With thousands of youths compelled to search for opportunities elsewhere, the city’s potential for economic advancement remains constrained.
Visakhapatnam’s railway infrastructure woes highlight the urgent need for proactive governmental intervention. By prioritising railway development projects and addressing bureaucratic inefficiencies, the government can unlock the city’s economic potential and enhance citizens’ quality of life.
