Ram Gopal Varma’s Saaree explores the dangers of digital intimacy

Must read

Controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is back with a psychological thriller titled Saaree. Featuring Sathya Yadu and Aradhya Devi in the lead roles, the film is directed by Giri Krishna Kamal, with the story provided by RGV himself. Produced by businessman Ravishankar Varma, the film is set for release on April 4, with its trailer launching on Thursday in Hyderabad.
Speaking about the film’s theme, RGV explained, “When we communicate in person, we connect better. But through social media apps like WhatsApp, where we don’t see the other person directly, we tend to develop emotional intimacy much faster. We end up sharing personal matters, which can lead to various psychological consequences.” He added that Saaree explores these issues in depth. “This is a serious subject, and the film delves into the consequences of digital intimacy. I wrote the story myself and Giri Krishna Kamal has done a great job directing it.”
Regarding the casting, RGV shared that he discovered Aradhya through a reel of hers wearing a saree and was impressed by her performance. He also praised Sathya for his acting skills, stating that the film features some intense performances. Although he refrained from calling the film a message-driven project, RGV expressed hope that it would make young women more cautious about their interactions online. When asked about political and legal issues surrounding theaters in Andhra Pradesh, he remarked, “Politics and films are separate. I don’t foresee any trouble in getting Saaree released in Andhra Pradesh.”
Addressing the controversy over actors promoting betting apps, he stated, “Authorities should educate actors about which endorsements are legally permissible. Taking sudden actions against them is not the right approach.”
