The South Central Railway (SCR) on Thursday announced that it gained Rs 513 crore on passenger trains during May.
The previous best was Rs 467.82 crore, which was earned in April 2023. Similarly, the zone has transported 12.517 million tonnes of originating freight during May, which is the highest ever and the previous best was 12.370 MTs in March, 2023.
A total of 26.11 million passengers travelled through SCR last month, which is a 24% increase from the same time last year. Apart from the regular trains, the zone has operated 538 trips of special trains in the month of May to meet the additional rush during the summer season. This has helped in transportation additionally 4.65 lakh passengers, while generating Rs 36.52 crore of revenue.
On the freight segment, the zone has transported 12.517 MTs of freight loading in May, which is the best-ever freight loading achieved for any month in any financial year. This is nearly 7% more than the corresponding loading recorded last year. Simultaneously, freight revenue has grown by 14% during this year growing to Rs 1213.36 crore in May, compared to Rs 1065.15 crore in May, 2022.
Coal continued to lead the growth in the overall freight loading of the zone by registering 7% growth and contributing 6.484 MTs of loading. Other significant commodities which have contributed towards overall freight loading of SCR includes: Cement (3.106 MTs), food grains (0.444 MTs), fertilizers (0.740 MTs), iron ore (0.363 MTs) and containers (0.211 MTs) among others. The zone has been giving special thrust towards strengthening its freight traffic by implementing a wide variety of initiatives and special measures. The SCR has been moving in a proactive manner to attract the new streams of traffic and also retain the existing traffic.
Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager, SCR, congratulated both the operating and commercial teams over the achievement. He expressed satisfaction for the way in which the zone is registering the best performance month by month. The General Manager also appreciated the staff of all departments for maintaining the excellent coordination which has led to the improvement towards the overall performance of the zone.
