Commissioner Chekuri Kirthi of Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has emphasised the need for taking strict measures against mineral water plants found to be selling water that does not meet prescribed standards, thereby posing a threat to public health. She announced the seizure of six such plants in Guntur city due to violations of regulations.
Acting upon the commissioner’s directives, officials from departments overseeing public health, town planning, and law enforcement collaborated on Monday to apprehend mineral water plants flagged by the regional laboratory for non-compliance.
In her statement, Commissioner Kirthi highlighted the prevalence of numerous unauthorised and substandard water plants within Guntur city. She revealed that samples collected by the regional laboratory of Guntur Medical College from several plants confirmed discrepancies. Among the facilities seized were Sai Flavors Water Plant in Srinagar, Blue Drops in Kakumanuvaritota, Sri Tejashree Purified Drinking Water Plant in Sarada Colony Main Road, Lily Mineral Water Plant in IPD Colony Main Road, Anuradha Water Plant, and Saptagiri Enterprises in NGO Colony.
The Commissioner recounted how during a recent visit by District Collector Venugopal Reddy to Srinagar, residents voiced concerns about illnesses stemming from water sold by the local mineral water plant. Responding promptly, the Collector ordered the seizure of the implicated plant. Commissioner Kirthi emphasized ongoing inspections of water plants to ensure compliance with standards, warning of decisive actions against those jeopardizing public health. She also mentioned that ward secretariats are compiling information on both authorized and unauthorized mineral water plants.
CMOH Dr. Asha, MHO Madhusudan, officials from Guntur Medical College, and Secretariat Secretaries also participated in the raids.
