Fresh off the release of Chhorii 2 on Prime Video, Soha Ali Khan is basking in the glow of audience appreciation for her role in the horror sequel. But beyond the chilling frames and eerie silences, Soha recently revealed a deeply personal and insightful nugget of advice—one that came from none other than her legendary mother, Sharmila Tagore. In a candid chat with IANS, Soha shared what she calls one of the most intriguing pieces of acting wisdom she’s ever received. “Forget the comments—there have been many, good and bad. But I remember something she said that stayed with me,” Soha recounted. “She told me to imagine the camera as a man I’m interested in. That I should flirt with it. Not by looking directly at it, but by letting everything I say register with him. Like he’s sitting across from me in a restaurant—I want him to notice me, find me beautiful, hear what I say, but I’m never speaking to him directly. It was such an unusual and brilliant way to build a connection with the camera.”
It’s not the only gem Sharmila Tagore has shared over the years. Soha also opened up about another moment of maternal guidance—this time, on emotional detachment from a role. “After I finished my first film, I found myself missing the set, the people, and especially the character. I told my mother I wanted to stay in that world longer,” she said. “She told me, ‘It’s normal to fall in love with your character, but you must learn to detach. That’s the only way to reset, recalibrate, and fully commit to your next role.’”
