The creation of Telangana State is entirely due to the resolute leadership and unwavering commitment of Sonia Gandhi, the Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies, Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said in the Assembly on Monday.
He reiterated that the announcement of Telangana’s creation on December 9, 2009, remains a landmark day in the state’s history and urged perpetual recognition of its significance.
Recalling the historic announcement by the then Union Home Minister on December 9, 2009, at 11 pm, Uttam said it marked an unforgettable moment of celebration across Telangana.
Welcoming Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s recent decision to install a statue of Telangana Thalli on the secretariat’s premises, he suggested similar installations in all district headquarters. He also advocated annual celebrations on December 9 to ensure the story of Telangana state’s formation remains alive for future generations.
Uttam emphasised that Telangana’s people are forever indebted to Sonia Gandhi for standing firm on her commitment to statehood despite immense political pressures. He hailed her courage in delivering on the promise made during the 2004 Karimnagar rally, describing her as the sole architect of Telangana.
He highlighted Hyderabad’s inclusion in Telangana and the allocation of its revenue exclusively to the state and that it became possible only due to her determination.
Uttam underlined his role in Telangana’s formation, stating that he actively participated in all-party meetings held by the Central Government, where he presented strong arguments for the necessity of Telangana.
He said he also provided comprehensive documentation to the Srikrishna Commission, detailing why the inclusion of Hyderabad in Telangana was essential and pressing for the fifth option of a Hyderabad-inclusive Telangana.
Uttam also praised Sonia Gandhi’s transformative leadership as UPA Chairperson, during which ‘revolutionary’ laws like the Right to Education, Right to Information, Food Security Act, and the National Employment Guarantee Act were enacted.
