Stringent steps taken to curb cockfights, gambling

Collector V Prasanna Venkatesh said that stringent steps were taken to curb the cockfight, guntada and other such gambling and illicit liquor in the district.

The Collector held a meeting with Superintendent of police Rahul Dev Sharma, excise and other police officials here on Wednesday and reviewed the steps being taken to check the cockfights, Guntata, illicit liquor and other gambling activities. The Collector also held review meetings virtually with the mandal level officials and reviewed the steps taken to contain cockfights and other such gambling activities.

The Collector directed the police to take steps such a way that the cockfight organisers should fear to organise cockfights. The Collector warned that actions would be taken by the organisers as well as those who stake on the cockfihts and other gambling. The Collector told the officials stringent steps should be taken to check the cockfights as per the court’s order. The village, mandal and division committees should be held responsible if cockfights are held in their limits.

The Collector directed the officials to set up a control room to work round the clock and take steps to send the phone number to the public. The high court’s directions on the cockfight and the control room phone number should be displayed through banners.

A vigilant committee comprising tahsildar and SHO should be formed to monitor the actions. Strict vigil should be laid at all vulnerable places where the cockfights are organised. Steps should be taken to curb the illicit liquor.

SP Rahul Dev Sharma said that teams comprising police personnel, revenue, panchayat and secretariat staff were being formed to curb the cockfights. The SP directed the officials to take up a special patrol to check the cockfights. The SP said that 552 people had been bound over and 841 sharp edged knives which are used in cockfights had been seized in the district. Joint Collector P Arun Babu, SEB JD N Suryachandra Rao, SEB informant superintendent Arun Kumar, DSP Paideshwar Rao and other officials were present.
