In a remarkable demonstration of resilience and efficiency, the Waltair Division of the Indian Railways accomplished a critical infrastructure project despite the disruptive impact of Cyclone Michaung on Monday. The ambitious undertaking involved the construction of a Limited Height Subway at Kantakapalli, aiming to eliminate Level Crossing (LC) no. 477.
“The completion of the Limited Height Subway project is a testament to the unwavering commitment and resilience of our team in the face of challenging weather conditions,” remarked Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Saurabh Prasad.
Despite the impending cyclone and the associated disruptions, the Waltair Division’s engineering expertise and unwavering determination enabled them to commence and complete the project within a record timeframe. DRM Saurabh Prasad, along with Assistant Divisional Railway Managers (ADRMs) and Senior Officers oversaw the construction process, coordination and adherence to the project’s timeline.
“The teamwork displayed during the construction phase was exceptional. It reflects the dedication of our team members from various departments who worked tirelessly to accomplish this feat,” added Saurabh Prasad.
The construction methodology utilised the Cut & Cover method, involved meticulous excavation below the mainline tracks, followed by the precise placement of base slabs. Prefabricated Boxes were then launched beneath the tracks, and the swift backfilling of earth and ballast showcased the team’s efficiency in meeting project timelines.
The primary objective of the Limited Height Subway project was to enhance safety and operational efficiency by eliminating Level Crossing no. 477, a significant hazard for both commuters and railway operations. With the successful completion of the project, train services resumed seamlessly in the afternoon, contributing to the overall improvement of railway infrastructure.
Saurabh Prasad stressed the collaborative nature of the project, stating that “The collaborative effort involving engineering expertise, heavy machinery operation, and the dedication of our workforce played a pivotal role in the success of this project.”
Ahead of the project’s commencement, DRM, ADRMs, and Senior Officers conducted on-site reviews and detailed planning, considering the impending Cyclone Michaung. This meticulous approach enabled the team to adapt to the changing weather conditions and ensure the project’s successful execution amidst the cyclone’s impact.
Expressing gratitude for the team’s dedication and commending their accomplishment, the DRM concluded: “The successful completion of this project stands as a testament to the Waltair Division’s commitment to operational excellence and safety, even in the face of challenging weather conditions.”
