In a rare display of unity, the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) have come together to oppose proposed amendments to the Waqf Act by the Central Government, advocating for stronger protections for Waqf properties. This collaboration was highlighted during the Waqf Parirakshana Maha Sabha-Chalo Vijayawada event, organised by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) Andhra Pradesh, which saw enthusiastic participation from minority communities and political leaders from both parties.
Addressing the gathering, TDP Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath reaffirmed the TDP’s commitment to defending the interests of the Muslim community, asserting that any amendments detrimental to Waqf properties would be met with strong resistance.
He praised Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for his ongoing efforts to enhance the development of the Muslim community and noted the party’s proposal for the Waqf Board Amendment Act to be examined by a Joint Parliamentary Committee, a move facilitated by Naidu.
Echoing this sentiment, Narasaraopet MP Lavu Srikrishnadevarayalu expressed support for the event, labelling it a significant step in opposing the amendments. He pledged to communicate the community’s concerns to both the Chief Minister and the Central Government to protect the rights of Muslims and their Waqf properties.
Former Chairman of the AP Legislative Council, MA Sharif, also spoke passionately against the proposed changes, stating that the TDP would actively pursue their cancellation through discussions with Chief Minister Naidu.
From the YSRCP, Rajya Sabha MP V Vijayasai Reddy reiterated his party’s opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill, arguing it undermines Muslim traditions. He criticised TDP MP and Union Minister K Rammohan Naidu for his silence during the bill’s introduction in the cabinet, highlighting constitutional obligations for ministers who disagree with cabinet decisions. Reddy confirmed that the YSRCP has formally registered objections to several aspects of the Waqf amendment and will persist in advocating for Muslim rights until the amendments are rescinded.
This unprecedented collaboration between the TDP and YSRCP underscores a united front in the fight to protect Waqf properties and the interests of the Muslim community in Andhra Pradesh.
