Actress Malavika Mohanan exudes calm confidence as she prepares for the release of her latest film, Thangalaan. Starring opposite the legendary Chiyaan Vikram and directed by the acclaimed Pa Ranjith, the film is generating significant buzz as one of the most anticipated Tamil releases of the year.
Malavika, known for her captivating performances and striking screen presence, took time out to share her thoughts on Thangalaan, her evolving career and the distinct challenges she faced while portraying her character, Aarthi. “I was eager to work on well-written roles by good filmmakers,” Malavika reveals. Her enthusiasm for tackling complex characters is evident as she reflects on the monotony of playing similar roles repeatedly. For Malavika, the chance to delve into a new and challenging role was an opportunity she could not pass up.
Addressing about her character in Thangalaan, she explains, “Yes, I did think about Thangalaan, as audiences had seen me in certain kinds of roles before. However, I was determined to crack the character of Aarthi.” Her commitment to this role is palpable and she hints at the unique aspects of her character that will undoubtedly surprise viewers.
Thangalaan is poised to be a cinematic spectacle, shedding light on the historical significance of the Kolar Gold Fields during the British era. The film promises to be a groundbreaking addition to the South Indian film industry, known for its innovative concepts and storytelling. Directed by Pa Ranjith, this film is set to be released in multiple languages—including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam—on August 15, 2024. The music, composed by G.V. Prakash Kumar, adds another layer of anticipation to this already highly anticipated project.
Malavika speaks highly of her collaboration with Chiyaan Vikram, noting, “Acting alongside Vikram was a great experience. Without him, I might not have been able to perform the Aarthi character as well as I did. Thangalaan is one of the toughest films made in the Indian film industry, and we often wondered if we could portray these roles correctly. It wasn’t just me; everyone felt the same way. Vikram’s presence was crucial to our performance.” Reflecting on her broader career, Malavika also touched on her experience in the Telugu film industry. “The Telugu film industry is very large. I came here waiting for an opportunity to make a bang with a film. I consider it fortunate to get such an opportunity with Raja Saab.” She also shared her joyful experience working with Prabhas, highlighting his generosity in sending her some of Hyderabad’s best food, which she found reminiscent of her mother’s cooking.

On her diverse roles, Malavika remarked, “Maruthi is known for designing female characters well. The character I play in Thangalaan is completely different from the one in Raja Saab.” This contrast underscores her versatility as an actress and her commitment to taking on varied and challenging roles. As Thangalaan approaches its release date, Malavika Mohanan’s anticipation and enthusiasm are clear. Her dedication to her craft and her collaboration with some of the industry’s finest talent promise a film that will leave a lasting impression on audiences.
