“The only director I could trust to pull that off was Anurag Kashyap,” reveals showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane as Sacred Games ranks #1 on IMDb’s Top 50 Indian Web Series of all time
Celebrating the success of Sacred Games ranking first on IMDb’s Top 50 Indian Web Series of all time, showrunner and co-director Vikramaditya Motwane revealed some unheard anecdotes about the first season of the thriller series. Find out below:
Motwane on how he only trusted Anurag Kashyap with co-directing Sacred Games, “In Sacred Games season one, we had two different worlds. We had the Sartaj world, the modern day, and the current period. And we had the Gaitonde world, which was the past, his childhood, his coming up to adulthood, and his peak.
We couldn’t shoot episode-wise because we had to shoot both simultaneously. We had to have two directors doing two separate worlds, almost as feature films. Honestly, the only director I could trust would pull that off was Anurag (Kashyap). So he went off and shot his little movie. I shot my little movie. Aarti Bajaj put it together.”
Vikramaditya on the cult-favourite thumb-cutting scene, “In episode eight of Sacred Games, we have the popular thumb-cutting scene where Malcolm chops Sartaj’s thumb. It was something we hadn’t discussed before in the script. Varun (Grover) proposed the idea of doing it in episode eight. I was shocked when I read it, but it was super exciting!
On the shoot day, even though it was fake and a shoot, there was something very visceral about witnessing that action sequence being performed. This cleaver coming down, his thumb chopped off, and the fake blood all made it look authentic.
That moment gave all of us a rush of adrenaline. Saif (Ali Khan) put a hanky on his hand with a lot of blood on it and performed a ton of action that day, fighting Malcolm. It was a packed day of work, but it was great fun. After that came Sartaj’s big heroic moment when he completes his arc.”
