In an unprecedented development, tomato prices soared to Rs 150 per kg on Thursday at the renowned Madanapalle tomato market, touted as the largest in Asia. Normally, the market receives a substantial 1200 metric tonnes of tomato produce each day.

However, the recent onslaught of untimely rains and scorching heat waves have severely impacted tomato yields, reducing the daily supply to a mere 600 metric tonnes.

As a result of this drastic reduction in supply, the demand-supply gap has widened significantly, causing the tomato price to skyrocket beyond the reach of ordinary consumers.

Notably, today’s price of Rs 150 per kg at the Madanapalle tomato market is also reflected in retail markets, where tomatoes are being sold at a staggering Rs 200 per KG.

Madanapalle market plays a vital role in the export of tomatoes to several cities, including Hyderabad, Bangalore, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The cultivation of tomatoes is prominent in regions like Madanapalle, Tambalapalli, Peleru, Chittoor, Kuppam, and Palamaner mandals.

As the tomato price continues to surge, farmers are facing new challenges in safeguarding their crops. In response to the increasing incidents of nighttime thefts, farmers are resorting to sleeping in makeshift tents within their fields to protect their valuable produce.

Despite the challenges posed by thefts, the farmers are optimistic about the bountiful tomato crop, which has led to substantial profits.

It remains to be seen how this price surge will impact consumers and traders in the coming days, given the significance of tomatoes in everyday cooking and their extensive use in various dishes.

As the situation unfolds, farmers and traders will closely monitor market trends and weather conditions to navigate these challenging times.
