The Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister, Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, strongly criticised BRS’s Suryapet MLA Guntakandla Jagadish Reddy for his controversial remarks against Assembly Speaker Gadam Prasad Kumar.
He describes the comments as highly ‘inappropriate’ and an ‘insult’ to India’s parliamentary democracy.
Speaking in the Assembly on Thursday, Uttam asserted that the Speaker has supreme authority in the legislative system and that no Member has the right to question his authority. He said that Jagadish’s remarks ‘undermined’ the parliamentary system and reflected arrogance.
He also pointed out that the Speaker is a senior Dalit leader and added that the comments made against him revealed an elitist bent of mind. He warned that such behaviour would not be tolerated and that strong action must be taken against the MLA.
Recalling past incidents, Uttam mentioned how, during the tenure of the BRS government, MLAs Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Sampath Kumar had their memberships revoked during the Governor’s address in the Assembly.
Demanding strong action against Jagadish Reddy, he said the matter should be referred to the Assembly Ethics Committee for review.
