Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar has said that the Vijayawada city administration focuses on sustainable and inclusive approach to end the plastic pollution in the city, for which steps are already being taken by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation in controlling single use plastic in and around the city by educating and motivating the public. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) organised the International Forum to End Plastic Pollution in Cities in Paris, France, from May 25-28.
Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar, Pratishtha Mamgain, Ambikapur Municipal Corporation Commissioner, and Smitha R, Secretary, Port Blair, were invited to participate in the event and they presented their views on how to end plastic pollution in the cities.
The VMC Commissioner said that the main aim of the Forum was to end plastic pollution in cities and also to strengthen the national framework for managing plastic waste in close collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. He stated that it was also proposed in the Forum to establish a national digital platform to monitor the recycling and reuse rates of plastic waste in cities and in States and also to adopt national-level guidelines for plastic waste management.
The VMC Commissioner said that a lunch was hosted by the Mayor of Paris city, where all issues and topics related to urban development were discussed with a special focus on waste management.
