Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has decided to withdraw the cases filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against Civil Rights Association activist Prof. Haragopal and others.
The Chief Minister directed DGP Anjani Kumar to withdraw the cases immediately against Prof. Haragopal, Prof. Padmaja Shah and others. The DGP issued orders to the Mulugu SP regarding this after the directions of the CM.
It may be recalled that the Tadvai police had filed cases against 152 activists and intellectuals on August 12, 2022, in the Mulugu district. The police filed cases invoking the UAPA, the Arms Act and 10 CrPC sections after a complaint by CI Shankar.
After receiving information that Maoist Party State Committee meetings were going on August 19, 2022, in the Asnaguda-Yellapur Birelly forest area, Pasra CI Shankar and seven constables searched the area.
The Maoists escaped from the spot seeing the police around 10 am and warned other Maoists who were dressed in olive green fatigues. The police seized the Maoist literature and the names of 152 people who were working as per the Maoist agenda.
CI Shankar filed a complaint with the Tadvai police station alleging that these 152 persons have attacked government officials, destroyed government property, brainwashed tribal youth to work for Maoists, collected funds and was trying to grab power through an armed struggle. The Tadvai police filed cases against 152 persons after CI Shankar’s complaint.
The facts came to light when Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) President Chandramouli, who was arrested by the police two months ago, applied for bail at the Ranga Reddy district court. The police told the court that Chandramouli is facing more cases and about the Tadvai police FIR when the court asked the police about cases against Chandramouli.
Case scrapped as it was false
hyderabad: Rights activist Prof. Haragopal said the BRS government withdrew treason cases against him as they were false. He said the BRS government must withdraw all UAPA cases not only against him but against everyone else. He said the BRS government behaved like any other government and not like a Telangana movement ran party. “I didn’t expect such a government would take over Telangana,” Haragopal said.
Addressing the media after knowing that the BRS government withdrew the UAPA cases against him and some others on Saturday, Haragopal said the UAPA Act is undemocratic and added that they will launch a movement demanding its abolition.
He said that people will lose the right to free speech if laws like UAPA are enforced that they will create awareness among people about similar laws. He said that they will intensify protests along with other organisations demanding the scrapping of the UAPA Act.
Singer Vimalakka said the BRS government had been using the UAPA Act to suppress the opposition. Treason and sedition cases mean that governments still think that monarchy exists. She said they will take the issue seriously and organise protests against it.
POW Sandhya said the Telangana people fought not for this kind of Telangana. The people fought for a free and fair Telangana. She demanded that the government must withdraw the cases filed against everyone mentioned in the Tadvai police FIR if the BRS has any sincerity.
