The health experts of Cardiology Society of India (CSI) gathered for a walk on World Heart Day to create awareness and appeal to the government to promote preventive health checks to detect early symptoms of heart disease on Sunday.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of deaths globally, claiming more lives each year than cancer, HIV, AIDS and malaria combined, said Dr Aman Salwan, president of Cardiology Society of India (CSI) – Telangana State.
Cardiovascular diseases encompass a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. It could be broadly classified as coronary artery disease (CAD), which is caused by the build-up of plaque in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. It can lead to chest pain (angina), heart attacks and heart failure.
Dr PC Rath, national president, Cardiology Society of India, said, “World Heart Day is commemorated on September 29 every year to emphasise keeping the heart healthy and building awareness about healthy lifestyle, physical exercise, healthy diet and avoiding smoking. This year’s theme is Use Heart For Action.
I appeal to the government to promote preventive health checks to detect early symptoms of heart disease.”
