The police on Tuesday resorted to mild lathi-charg against farmers who gathered in strength in front of a shop selling seeds in the town.
Serpentine queues were formed in front of the seed shops and fertiliser shops in the town from Tuesday morning seeking Bollguard-2 and Raasi-695 cotton seeds.
Farmers in their thousands flooded the city from Tuesday morning on learning about arrival of 27,000 cotton seeds packets to the town.
The Agriculture Department officials and other staff members distributed two cotton seed bags to each farmer after checking their Aadhaar card.
Farmers from Tamsi, Talamadugu, Bhimpur, Jainadh, Bela, Mavala and Adilabad rural mandals flooded the town disrupted traffic in protest against supply of only two bags of seeds.
The farmers alleged that some big players and seeds dealers have been diverting the cotton seeds which are in high demand to market in the neighbouring Maharashtra state.
The farmers gave vent to their anger as some of the shops have started displaying “No Stock” boards. Women were also seen waiting in the queues for hours together armed with their Aadhaar Card.
The movement of traffic came to standstill at one phase. The police had tough time controlling the crowd.
Responding on the lathi-charge news, DSP Jeevan Reddy condemned media reports stating that the police exercised a lot of restraint to restore order and beefed up security rule out any inconvenience to the farmers. He denied police resorting to lathi-charge the farmers.
