As part of the ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign, another step has been taken towards a clean Vijayawada. Under the supervision of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ programme commenced with grandeur at the Makinen Basava Punnayya Stadium at Ajit Singh Nagar in Vijayawada on Tuesday.
Swachh Andhra Corporation Managing Director (MD) Gandham Chandrudu and Vijayawada Central MLA Bonda Uma Maheswara Rao officially launched the programme. They released the ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ poster in the presence of Swachh Vijayawada Brand Ambassador Dr G Samaram. Responding to the call of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner HM Dhyanachandra, several students and volunteers participated in the programme.
The participants took an oath to keep their surroundings clean. The guests planted trees as a symbol of environmental protection. They then picked up brooms and cleaned the surroundings as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign. The guests also flagged off a rally to raise public awareness on cleanliness.
Gandham Chandrudu highlighted the importance of ‘Swachhta’ in nature and culture. MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao stated that the Swachh Bharat Mission was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a noble intention. The aim is to transform Andhra Pradesh into a cleaner and more beautiful place. He praised Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s efforts through the Janmabhoomi programme in awakening a sense of cleanliness among the public. “We should keep our homes and surroundings clean and extend that same care to Vijayawada,” he said. He also emphasised the importance of planting trees, explaining that plants absorb carbon dioxide and provide humans with oxygen, thus protecting the environment.
