All crest gates of Nagarjuna Sagar lifted

Must read

After a gap of more than two years, all 26 crest gates of the Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) were lifted on Friday to release floodwaters downstream to the Pulichintala Project.
The decision to lift the gates was prompted by the heavy inflow of 2,74,065 cusecs of water from upstream. In addition to discharging the floodwaters, hydroelectric power generation has also commenced at the right and left canals of the NSP.
The lifting of all 26 crest gates at Nagarjuna Sagar is a rare event, drawing thousands of tourists from Hyderabad and other regions who gathered to witness the spectacular sight of water gushing through the gates.
Simultaneously, the Srisailam Dam also experienced a significant inflow on Friday, leading to the lifting of 10 crest gates to release 3.09 lakh cusecs of water downstream to the Nagarjuna Sagar Project.
Srisailam Dam is currently receiving 3.98 lakh cusecs of water, with the water level standing at 882.80 feet. The reservoir holds 203.42 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water against its full capacity of 215.80 TMC. Additionally, 65,410 cusecs of water are being released to generate hydroelectric power at the left and right canals.
Further downstream, the Pulichintala Project is also experiencing heavy inflow, receiving 2.42 lakh cusecs of water. Project engineers have lifted 11 crest gates to release 2.30 lakh cusecs of water to the Prakasam Barrage. Currently, 32 TMC of water is impounded at the Pulichintala Project, against its full capacity of 45.77 TMC.
