In a swift response to the alarming surge in newborn kidnappings and baby conversions, Police Commissioner Dr Shankha Brata Bagchi has initiated stringent measures to safeguard infants across the district. The Commissioner has called for a comprehensive overhaul of security protocols in all maternity and newborn care units.
Dr Bagchi has emphasised the urgent need for a proactive approach to prevent these heinous crimes. In a detailed letter to the District Collector, he has outlined a robust security plan that includes mandatory installation of high-definition CCTV cameras, round-the-clock monitoring by dedicated personnel, and the deployment of trained security guards in the vicinity of neonatal care units and maternity wards. To further ensure the safety of newborns, the Commissioner has proposed the implementation of RFID tagging for both mothers and infants, a technology that can effectively prevent baby swapping.
A recent inspection of healthcare facilities in the district has revealed security lapses. The Commissioner highlighted that out of 80 healthcare facilities in the city—comprising 68 private hospitals and 12 government hospitals—some currently lack the recommended security measures. Dr. Bagchi has reported these deficiencies to the District Collector, along with detailed suggestions for improvement.
The District Collector has been entrusted with the task of enforcing the new security guidelines across all private and government hospitals. The administration is expected to conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance. Dr Bagchi has assured the public that the Police Department is committed to working closely with healthcare providers and the community to create a safe environment for newborns. He has appealed to parents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
