Accusing the Congress Government of burdening Hyderabad’s working class, 11 BRS MLAs from the city have sent an open letter to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, demanding an immediate rollback of the Hyderabad Metro Rail fare hike. They described the increased fares as a “cruel burden” that could cost regular commuters hundreds more each month.

The MLAs pointed out that the hike, ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 20 per ticket, could lead to an additional monthly expenditure of Rs 500 to Rs 600 for each passenger.

“This is unacceptable in a city where lakhs of people, including students, employees, and daily wage workers, depend on the metro for affordable travel,” the letter said.

“Hyderabad deserves a public transportation model driven by public service, not private profits,” they wrote, pointing to global cities like Singapore, Berlin and Tokyo, which subsidise their metro systems. They said the fare hike goes against the spirit of public infrastructure and would push commuters back to roads, worsening traffic congestion and pollution.
