Burglaries, thefts, POCSO cases rise in West Godavari

Burglaries, thefts, POCSO cases and crime against women have gone up during the year 2022 in the WG district. Addressing an annual press conference here on Friday, Superintendent of police U Ravi Prakash said that in the year 2022, 172 robbery cases were registered as against 129 cases in the year 2021 and 559 theft cases were registered in 2022 as against 464 in 2021 in the district. He said that the police recovered Rs 3.26 crore by cracking 390 property lost cases.

The SP said that during the year 2022, 895 cases of crime against women took place in the district as against 690 in the year 2021. During the year 2022, 14 murders took place in the district as against 18 murders in the previous year.

42 cases of crimes against children (POCSO) took place in the year 2022 as against 18 cases in the previous year. The police arrested 167 illicit liquor traders and seized 551.12 IMFL, and 368.08 litres of country-made liquor. 10,85,929.76 KGs of PDS rice was seized while being transported illegally in 67 cases and arrested 157 accused. The police invoked the PD Act against five notorious illicit liquor distillers in the year 2022.

The police during the year 2022, seized 128 kg of ganja and arrested 56 peddlers in 16 cases. As many as 5,606 people were arrested in 1,260 cases for indulging in gambling and seized Rs 1,59,96,750, 492 vehicles, 732 cocks, and 928 sharp-edged blades used to tie to the legs of roosters. In the year 2022, 3,51,328 banned tobacco products worth Rs 35.13 lakh were seized, and 224 persons were arrested in 219 cases.

During the year 2022, 630 road accidents took place in the district in which 191 people lost their lives and 439 people were injured. The police registered 927 drunk and drive cases under MV Act and issued 1,58,556 challans and collected Rs 4,75,59,665 penalties. He said that steps were also taken for the welfare of police personnel including medical checkups conducted on the family members of police personnel.

SP Ravi Prakash said that the district police are following the friendly policing concept in the district and making the best efforts to curb crimes, accidents, and offences against women.
