After two months of protest, people erupted in joy on Wednesday at Dilawarpur village in the district with the State government issuing orders halting the construction of an ethanol factory.
Farmers announced the withdrawal of the two-year-old agitation after District Collector Abhilasha Abhinav assured the people that the construction of the factory was stopped.
Following the announcement, celebrations erupted in the village. The farmers urged the government to cancel the permission granted to the ethanol factory.
On Wednesday morning, farmers in the village expressed that the mistakes made by the previous government had posed a major problem for the Congress government. Several villagers pointed out that the actions of the ruling party had caused unrest in four villages. Villagers strongly criticised former minister Indrakaran Reddy and current MLA Maheshwar Reddy, blaming them for causing sleepless nights in otherwise peaceful villages.
In the green crop fields, factory, if established, would have wreaked havoc, the farmers said. The people in three villages spent sleepless nights, worrying about their fate. The peaceful life of the villagers in their serene surroundings had been disrupted. The villagers had been protesting for over a year, opposing the establishment of the factory because of the fear that the ethanol factory would release toxic air pollutants and it would lead to soil degradation.
The Collector reported the situation to the Chief Minister’s Office. Upon learning of the situation, the government immediately issued orders halting the factory’s operations.
