Prakasam District Collector AS Dinesh Kumar has called upon people to wear handloom clothes. He inaugurated a handloom cloth exhibition organised on the occasion of National Handloom Day along with Mayor Gangada Sujata here on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that the handloom sector is providing huge employment opportunities in India after the agriculture sector. He said that there are a large number of handloom weaving units at many villages in Kanigiri, Bestavaripeta, Chimakurthi, and Kotthapatnam mandals in the district, adding that, a large number of handloom weaving units are working at Ethamukkala village also.
The handloom weaver weaves quality lungies, sarees, blankets, towels, and other dress materials, the Collector said, stating that training is being imparted to the handloom weavers to weave jacquard sarees.
Collector Dinesh Kumar said that Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had taken steps to set up common facility centres with the cooperation of the Central government for the benefit of handloom weavers at Ethamukkala, Kanigiri and Bestavaripeta villages and the Chief Minister would inaugurate the facility centres soon.
The state government aimed at making handloom a lucrative profession, Collector Dinesh Kumar said and assured of setting up a permanent stall in the Collector’s office to promote the handloom products.
Mayor G Sujata said that the state government is implementing YSR Netanna Nestam and Cheneta pension Kanuka schemes, especially for handloom weavers. She called upon people to give importance to wearing handloom fabrics. The responsibility lies on all to protect the handloom weaving sector and support the handloom weavers and their families, she said.
The Collector flagged off a rally organized to create awareness of wearing handloom fabrics. State tailor development cooperative federation chairperson Sheik Subhani Bee and others were present.
