In a startling turn of events, a Municipal Council meeting in Pithapuram descended into chaos on Saturday when two high-ranking officials physically clashed.
The confrontation occurred during a routine council meeting held in the Pithapuram Municipal Hall. Long-standing differences between Municipal Commissioner Kanaka Rao and Divisional Engineer (DE) Bhavani Shankar reached a boiling point. The tension between the two had been simmering for some time, particularly after DE Bhavani Shankar went on extended leave and later resumed duty. During his absence, Commissioner Rao authorised the Executive Engineer to sign off on certain bills, a move that ignited controversy.
During the meeting, Councillor B. Deva questioned the Commissioner on why the Executive Engineer’s signature was sought when the Divisional Engineer had already rejoined. In response, Commissioner Rao stated that the Collector had instructed them to proceed in this manner for the clearance of files.
What began as a verbal exchange quickly escalated into a heated argument between Commissioner Rao and DE Bhavani Shankar. In a fit of anger, the two officials physically assaulted each other, shocking everyone present. Other officials and council members swiftly intervened to break up the altercation.
The sight of two senior officials brawling in full view of the council members and other attendees left everyone stunned. The incident quickly spread across social media, sparking widespread outrage. Members of the Pithapuram Municipal Council have since demanded strict action against the errant officers.
A local Jana Sena leader remarked, “We’ve seen political leaders clash during debates, but witnessing top officials engage in such a brawl, especially in Pithapuram, the constituency of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, is unprecedented. Disciplinary action must be taken against these officers.” The altercation has become a hot topic of discussion among officials across the state, raising concerns about discipline and decorum within public offices.
