Renowned ophthalmologist Vaggu Sree Kumar said on Friday focussed on eye health and particularly on conjunctivitis. Dr Sree Kumar dwelt on the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of the widespread ocular ailment.

“Eye-Conjunctivitis is a very common eye condition that can be caused by a virus, bacteria, or allergies,” he said. “It’s characterised by inflammation of the conjunctiva which is the clear membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the white of the eye.”

Dr Sree Kumar emphasised that viral conjunctivitis, caused by the same viruses that lead to common colds, is highly contagious and characterised by redness, watery discharge, and itching. Bacterial conjunctivitis, on the other hand, stems from bacteria and results in thicker, yellow or green discharge along with redness. Allergic conjunctivitis, triggered by allergens like pollen or pet dander, leads to itching, redness, and watery eyes.

The symptoms of conjunctivitis can vary depending on the cause, but they typically include red and irritated eyes, swollen eyelids, watery eyes, thick, mucus-like discharge from the eyes, etc.

He said that conjunctivitis is usually not serious and goes away on its own within a week or two. However, it is important to see an ophthalmologist if the symptoms are severe or continue to persist after a few days. “Get plenty of rest, avoiding rubbing your eyes. If your conjunctivitis is caused by a bacterial infection, your ophthalmologist may prescribe antibiotic eye drops.” He said.

Dr Sree Kumar also emphasised the importance of preventing the spread of conjunct
ivitis.
