The Telangana Government has requested the National Water Development Agency (NWDA) planning the interlinking of the Godavari and Cauvery rivers to consider the Godavari–Krishna link only after the completion or at least partial construction of the Mahanadi–Godavari link of the interlinking of rivers project as surplus water is not available for diversion in the Godavari at 75 per cent dependability.

TS said that united Andhra Pradesh had proposed a dam at Inchampalli for the utilisation of Godavari waters in the Telangana region. In a letter, Engineer-in-Chief C. Muralidhar said, “But Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh objected to the proposed dam at Inchampalli due to land submergence in their States. As the location is very close to the border with Chhattisgarh it may again lead to objections from that State.

The already constructed Sammakkasagar Barrage is located just 24 km downstream of Inchampalli barrage site. One more major barrage nearby will cause difficulties in routing flood waters as the lag time is very less between these reservoirs.” Telangana said that the downstream use from the proposed site in Telangana is around 158 TMC, that is, JCRDLIS (38 TMC), SRLIS (70 TMC) and Sammakkasagar (50 TMC) may get affected.
