Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP (Rajya Sabha) GVL Narasimha Rao said that it was Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu, who was responsible for the delay in the Polavaram project construction.

Speaking to the media persons on Friday, the BJP MP said that when the Union government said that it would build the Polavaram Project, Chandrababu Naidu came forward to build the project during the TDP regime.

He further alleged there was large-scale corruption in the project with Chandrababu and the TDP leaders taking commissions in the name of the irrigation projects. He questioned why irrigation projects were not built in the Rayalaseema region, especially Chittoor district and particularly in his home constituency of Kuppam when Chandrababu Naidu was CM for 14 years and sought an answer from him. It is amusing to note that Chandrababu is now saying that he would complete the Polavaram project if voted to power, MP ridiculed.

As part of his Eluru district tour, Chandrababu Naidu who hasn’t been getting attention from the public changed his agenda and decided to go to the Polavaram project site in a publicity stunt of sorts. However, that failed when the district police officials denied permission to the TDP chief for entering the Polavaram site. He staged a protest in his usual style against the denial of permission but later withdrew the protest after the police spoke to him.

It may be noted that DSP Lata Kumari in a statement on Friday said that Polavaram visit was not in Chandrababu’s schedule. She said that during Chandrababu’s visit to the Eluru district, he suddenly asked for permission to visit the Polavaram project as soon as he reached the public meeting place on Thursday. She said that there was no prior information about the visit to the Polavaram project in his tour schedule.

The visitors to the Polavaram project areas were supposed to get their prior permission from the Irrigation Department but they did not get it, she said. In view of Maoist week celebrations from December 2 to 8 in agency areas, police personnel was not given permission to visit remote areas as part of security measures, the DSP added.
