‘Health officials must check maternity deaths’

West Godavari District Collector Sumit Kumar has directed the health officials to ensure that no maternal death takes place in the district.
The Collector held a meeting with the government and private doctors, ICDS officials, ASHA workers and ANMs and reviewed the deliveries in the government hospital and maternal deaths.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that maternal deaths should not take place under any circumstances and he ordered that the health conditions of pregnant women should be thoroughly examined and appropriate treatment should be provided.
The Collector directed the ICDS Project Director to review with the ICDS staff once every 15 days the nutrition the pregnant women get since the day of conception and take appropriate action.
He said that it has come to his notice that the ambulance rates are very high in the case of transporting a pregnant woman to better medical care in an emergency and a meeting would be held to control these and determine the rate per kilometre.
Collector Sumit Kumar said an inquiry was conducted and orders were issued in connection with six maternal deaths during the meeting. DMHO Dr D Maheswar Rao, DCHS Dr P Suryanarayana, district immunisation officer Dr D Sudhalakshmi, district Arogyasri coordinator Dr S Keerthi Kiran and district ICDS officer B Sujata Rani were among those who were present.
