The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and the Department of Heritage of the Telangana government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) to undertake the restoration of three significant historical monuments in Hyderabad. The MoU aims to restore the Saidanima Tomb, Badshahi Asoorkhana, and Sheikhpet Sarai, preserving their architectural heritage and promoting cultural tourism.

The announcement was made by Arvind Kumar, Special Chief Secretary of Urban Development, in a Tweet on Friday. He stated that the restoration works would commence soon, marking a significant step towards preserving Hyderabad’s rich historical legacy.

Saidanima Tomb, a state-protected monument, is an architectural marvel that showcases a blend of Mughal and Qutb Shahi styles. Built in 1883 by Nawab Abdul Haq Diler Jung, it stands as a tribute to his mother, Hazrath Saidani Ma Saheba. However, over the years, neglect and lack of maintenance have taken a toll on this 131-year-old heritage structure. The dome and walls suffer from peeling plaster and black patches, necessitating urgent restoration.

The Badshahi Asoorkhana, the second oldest monument in Hyderabad after the Charminar, holds immense historical significance. Constructed immediately after the Charminar’s completion in 1591, it is a protected heritage site. While ancillary structures within the premises have suffered damage, the main hall of the Asoorkhana is intact. Adorned with multi-coloured tiles and featuring flaming Alams as a dominant theme, this historic structure’s walls were partially damaged during the 1908 floods.

Another heritage gem set to be revived is the Shaikpet Sarai, a historic rest house dating back to the Qutb Shahi and Nizam era. Spread across three acres near the Golconda Fort, this 17th century structure will undergo restoration for adaptive reuse.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, the National Institute of Urban Management, and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture will collaborate to bring new life to this precinct, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The restoration of these monuments was announced in 2022 but the MoU has just been signed to officially commence the works.
