Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) Commissioner Arvind Kumar on Tuesday said that the authority would restore the Jail Khana at the Monda Market.
Kumar responded to a Twitter user named Mohammed Haseeb Ahmed, who shared a video of the structure, urging him to restore it. “It will be great if we’re able to restore this beautiful heritage piece Jail Khana – Monda Market. Secunderabad. Soon this structure will complete 200 years. @arvindkumar_ias @sselvan @Ravi_1836 @KTRBRS @HMDA_Gov @telanganatouris . Asif Jahi Dynasty Architect Establishment,” read the Tweet.
The Jail Khana was established in 1826 where freedom-fighters were lodged. The heritage structure was built using monolithic granite and limestone. Several patriots, not just from Hyderabad, but also from Mysore and Maharashtra in pre-Independence India were imprisoned here by British rulers.
In 1937, it was converted into a commercial complex and was brought under the municipal corporation after the formation of Andhra Pradesh. In 2006, the jail was declared a heritage structure.
The dilapidated building awaits restoration; it is to be noted that Kumar had conducted a survey of the structure and various other locations inside the Monda Market in 2021.
The demand for the jail’s restoration has been raised several times in the past.
