With the Election Commission of India making the dates for the elections public, the Model Code of Conduct kicked in at 3:00 pm on Friday. This curtails government departments’ abilities to make major policy decisions, while some decisions require prior permission from the poll body. Within hours of the EC’s announcement, State Chief Electoral Officer Mukesh Kumar Meena swung into action. He got District Election Officers to remove hoardings, posters and cutouts with political announcements in government offices and at public places. He has also kept flying squads on their toes. The CEO has asked the officials concerned to increase vigil on state borders. Going by the flurry of activity initiated, it appears as if the election wing has an undesignated quick response team.
