Former minister Buaggna Rajendranath Reddy has criticised the coalition government for spreading falsehoods regarding the Polavaram issue, asserting that prioritising Amaravati over this national project is a concerning development.
Speaking to the media on Monday, he stated that the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government had worked to rectify the mistakes made by the TDP from 2014 to 2019 and emphasised the need for the Chandrababu Naidu government to not compromise on the Polavaram project.
He accused the TDP government of making a significant error by accepting outdated rates from 2010-11, which only covered the irrigation component, despite rising costs and an increase in the number of displaced persons. He also pointed out that the drinking water component along the route was not addressed.
Reddy claimed that after YS Jagan Mohan Reddy took office, efforts were made to rectify previous mistakes, asserting that had it not been for the COVID-19 pandemic, the project would have been completed by now.
He noted that the project, which began during YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s tenure, was neglected by Chandrababu Naidu due to his “Pattiseema misadventure.” He clarified that Pattiseema was merely the right bank canal envisioned by Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy, whereas Polavaram allows water to flow by gravity rather than requiring a lift.
Reddy also stated that the state did not object to the recent decision by the Centre regarding the project’s height, accusing the TDP of spreading blatant lies. He referred to correspondence concerning the reduction of the project’s height from 45.72 metres to 41.5 metres, the irrigation and other components, and the confusion created by the current government. In response to Pawan Kalyan’s comments, he remarked that as Deputy Chief Minister, Kalyan is effectively questioning his own government.
