New secretariat equipped to use latest tech

Must read

The Telangana secretariat getting ready for inauguration on April 30 is equipped to use the latest technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT).

With high-speed Internet, the latest technologies from CISCO and distributed antenna to augment 5G mobility, the IT infrastructure at the new secretariat costs Rs 14 crore.

IT applications have been set up in a futuristic way eventually enabling the government to use IoT to control bollards, room switches and access barriers. Facial recognition technology can also be adapted to register attendance.

“The platform is ready and can meet the technology needs for the next 10 years, that is, any new software application that comes in the next decade can be deployed easily. These technologies have not been installed, but if the government wants to do so it can be done. The most prominent feature is the upgraded data centre,” said IT Secretary Jayesh Ranjan.

The data centre which is 20 RAC is a captive one and is located on the lower ground floor. While the main data centre is in Gachibowli lots of data staging happens in our mini data centre which is the latest version, said Jayesh.

He said that on April 30, whatever officials would need to get going is ready. Officials said that more improvements and enhancements will be taken up eventually. The secretariat has 3,000 desktops and laptops. 130 people worked round the clock to set up this.

“One of the major improvements is focussing network equipment with 100G from the core to distribution at 40 GB and end 10G speed. As we have internal copper cabling we don’t need to have a separate switch for IoT. The entire platform is based on CISCO and all facilities are available under a single umbrella. The cell phones of officers can be used as an extension as well,” said Srinivas Pendyala, the Director of IT&C.

He added that there are smart boards where senior officers can save content. “If I am drawing on a smart board during a meeting it can be saved. It works for all senior officers and is a huge screen set up for senior officers and in conference halls,” Srinivas said.

There is a significant improvement in terms of speed, accessibility and dependency on OEM as we have used UPOE switches. “This takes care of wireless, voice and video. We have three Internet service providers providing 20 GB to backhaul, and 50 to 60 ps internet. It is an IT-based video conference. All senior offices will have VC and IT telephony. Earlier, it was IP over voice now it is voice over IP. Using distributed antenna we can augment 5G mobility system, that is, if someone is using a mobile handset and if there is no network coverage in a dark spot, it can be augmented and distributed, the official said.

The Telangana secretariat campus area network is integrated with TSWAN. “The integration is nearly complete. We are working with R&B people to have a stable UPS power supply,” he said.

Visitors will be given guest access to WiFi. They can register using their cell number and based on OTP and limited time frame they can access data. Only data access is allowed and there will be no video or images.

For officials, based on privilege, access is given to internal data. Internal data is not open to everyone. One department cannot access another department without approval.

The secretariat also has a live streaming facility at the media centre on the fifth floor.

The IT infrastructure will be handled by the contractor agency during the next five years and around 70 to 80 people would be on the job.
