With the summer season setting in, city-based eyecare experts have urged people not to neglect their eye health. They have provided some important tips to help maintain good eye health during summer. The intense heat of the sun and high levels of pollutants in the air can make our eyes more susceptible to infections, redness, itching, and inflammation. The dust, pollen and other substances in the air during summer can also cause eye allergies.
Dr Akhil Bevara from the Kallam Anji Reddy Campus of L V Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad advised that during summer, people should avoid direct exposure to the sun and wear appropriate sunglasses that can block at least 98% of UV rays. Using a hat or umbrella while outdoors can also prevent direct exposure of the eyes to sunlight. People should also maintain good personal hygiene, avoid rubbing their eyes and frequently clean their eyes with cold water.
Swimming is a popular summer activity, but it is important to wear protective glasses and ensure the water is clean and appropriately chlorinated. Those who experience dry eyes can benefit from using artificial lubricating eye drops and avoiding direct exposure to air-conditioning.
Dr Bevara added that it is essential to seek medical advice if a person experiences redness or itchiness in the eyes, rather than taking over-the-counter medications. He also warned that intense exposure to ultraviolet rays during summer can harm the eyes in several ways, including the formation of pterygium on the surface of the eye, cataract, and other ocular problems.
