Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha has announced plans to develop the police department with central government funding. During a review meeting at the state secretariat, she discussed pending dues and central funds, emphasising the coalition government’s focus on securing support for police, fire services, prisons, disaster management, and district military welfare schemes.
The Home Minister, along with MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni), a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs, conducted the review with senior officials of the Home and Disaster Management departments. Anitha outlined plans to establish advanced institutions like Greyhounds, Octopus, and Cyber Security units to address the evolving nature of crimes driven by technological advancements.
Anitha criticised the previous YSRCP government for failing to secure central funds and provide adequate facilities for the police. She noted that the current coalition government is moving quickly to develop infrastructure for the Andhra Pradesh Police Academy (APPA), with land acquisition for permanent buildings already completed. She revealed that 76 acres in Agiripalli Mandal, Eluru District, have been allocated for the Octopus Training Centre, and 498.23 acres in Relli village, Kottavalasa Mandal, Vizianagaram District, for the Greyhounds Training Centre. Currently, police training for SI-level and senior officers is conducted at the Police Training Centre in Anantapur district, while temporary Greyhounds training is held in Visakhapatnam.
MP Kesineni Sivanath highlighted that the establishment of 118 critical training institutions, expected since the bifurcation of Telugu states, remains incomplete. He announced that Home Minister Anitha will meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah on January 8 and 9 to discuss Andhra Pradesh’s proposals, including the need to secure Rs 1,150 crore in interim funds for disaster management. He also stressed the importance of modernising police stations and prisons.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Principal Secretary of the Home Department IG Vijay Kumar, ‘EAGLE’ Chief RK Ravikrishna, SP (SIB) Geetha Devi, Additional SP Jail Department Raghu, DG Fire Madireddy Prathap, Managing Director of Disaster Management Kurmanath, and Brigadier Reddy, Director of the State Sainik Welfare Board.
