The police foiled the Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) ‘Chalo Macherla’ programme on Friday by detaining TDP leaders at their houses and deploying a large number of police to Macherla. The TDP gave the ‘Chalo Macherla’ call t to register protest against the attacks on TDP activists and the burning of TDP office four days ago in Macherla.
The police detained TDP leaders at various places and did not allow them to leave their houses. Police outposts were set up at all vulnerable places and checking of vehicles was conducted at many places. The police did not allow TDP leaders and strangers to enter Macherla city.
The police detained former MLA Yarapatineni Srinivasa Rao in Piduguralla in the TDP office. He was not allowed to leave for Macherla. A grapple took place between the police and the TDP activists at the TDP office. Irate over the police’s highhandedness, the TDP activists burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The police also held TDP senior leaders BV Anjaneyulu, Prathipatu Pulla Rao, and Kommalapati Sridhar at Pondugula village when they were coming to Macherla from Hyderabad. They were taken to the Dachepalli police station.
The police detained former MLA Dhulipala Narendra in his house. The police clarified to the leaders that Section 144 was clamped in Macherla and had no permission to hold any programme in the town.
Meanwhile, the police arrested former minister Nakka Ananda Babu at his house here and took him to Nagarampalem police station. The police also detained former MLA Tenali Shravan Kumar. A large number of police were deployed at the residence of Yarapatineni Srinivasa Rao.
