Retd SC Judge Nazeer replaces Harichandan as AP Governor

President of India Droupadi Murmu appointed retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice Syed Abdul Nazeer as the new Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Biswabusan Harichandan has been appointed as Governor of Chhattisgarh.

Justice Abdul Nazeer hails from coastal Karnataka. He is the son of Fakir Saheb. He grew up in Beluvai/Moodbidri and completed his B.Com degree at Mahaveera College, Moodbidri. He obtained a law degree from SDM Law College, Kodialbail, Mangaluru.

He was enrolled as an advocate in 1983 and practised at the Karnataka High Court. In May 2003, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court. He was later appointed as permanent judge of the same High Court. In February 2017, Nazeer was elevated to the Supreme Court. He is the third judge ever to be elevated without serving as the chief justice of any high court.

Justice Abdul Nazeer was part of the bench which gave the judgment in the Ayodhya case and paved the way for the construction of the Ram temple.

Ram Jannabhoomi temple- Babri Masjid was a long-drawn dispute between the two communities which the Supreme Court finally decided on November 9, 2019.

Justice S. Abdul Nazeer was one of the five-member Supreme Court Bench that gave the final verdict. He retired in January. Justice Nazeer led the Constitution Bench that upheld the 2016 demonetisation process. He had also declared that there was no need to impose additional restrictions on the free speech right of Ministers, MPs, MLAs, and leaders.

Justice Nazeer was a part of several landmark constitution bench decisions, which included triple talaq, the right to privacy, the Ayodhya case, and recently on the Centre’s 2016 decision on demonetisation, and free speech of lawmakers.
