The Secunderabad Cantonment Board’s election notification has been released. Defence Joint Secretary Rakesh Mittal released the notification for elections in all 57 cantonment boards along with Secunderabad.

He said the Secunderabad Cantonment Board election would be held on April 30. There are eight wards in Secunderabad Cantonment.

Secunderabad Cantonment Board Elections were last held in 2015. The governing body’s term expired on February 10, 2020. Later, the Centre appointed a nominated member. Many approached courts to hold elections for the board. The courts directed the Cantonment Board to respond to this.

The Ministry of Defence issued an order appointing a committee a few days ago to merge the civil area under the board with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. At a time when the merger process is expected to gain momentum, the issue of board elections came to the fore.

In the 2015 elections, the BRS team led by Minister Harish Rao campaigned extensively in the cantonment area. For each ward, a minister was allotted in 2015. Even though the modalities of party symbols are yet to be decided, the battle is between the BRS and the BJP in all eight wards.
