Visakhapatnam MP M Sribharat has emphasized the need for significant enhancements to India’s maritime infrastructure, highlighting the importance of adapting to the evolving landscape of international trade. During the parliamentary debate on the Bills of Lading Bill, 2024 on Monday, Sribharat endorsed the Bill, stressing its role in providing a robust legal framework for modern trade.
Sribharat reiterated the NDA government’s commitment to strengthening the maritime sector, citing achievements such as the doubling of cargo handling capacity at major ports and the improved global ranking of Indian ports. However, he also raised critical concerns about the challenges facing the sector, particularly the rising freight costs that are impacting India’s trade competitiveness. To address this, Sribharat proposed reducing shipping expenses and developing domestic shipbuilding clusters to reduce dependence on foreign vessels.
The MP also highlighted the issue of port infrastructure, noting the depth limitations at Indian ports, which range between 14 to 16 meters, insufficient for accommodating mega vessels requiring an 18-meter draft. He proposed a dredging subsidy for major ports, including the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), to attract larger vessels and develop transhipment hubs.
Sribharat further emphasized the potential of cruise tourism, noting the Rs 100 crore investment in the Vizag cruise terminal. However, he pointed out the lack of an e-visa facility at VPT, a service available at other major ports, and urged the relevant ministry to address this issue.
Sribharat also underscored Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to collaborating with the central government to advance maritime trade. He praised the state’s 975 km coastline and 14 minor ports, highlighting the immense growth potential of its maritime sector. By addressing freight costs, boosting shipbuilding, and improving port infrastructure, Sribharat believes India can become a global shipping
