Sudheer Attavar’s Koragajja blends traditional music with modern innovation

Must read

Koragajja, directed by Sahitya Akademi Award-winner Sudheer Attavar, explores the fascinating story of Koragajja, a principal deity worshipped in the Karavali (Tulu Nadu) region of Karnataka, Kerala, and parts of Mumbai. The film delves into the transformation of an indigenous youth into the divine figure of Koragajja over 800 years ago. Music composer Gopi Sundar, who collaborated with Attavar, calls the project a ‘unique musical experience’.

Gopi Sundar explains that composing music for Koragajja took more time than usual, as he had to immerse himself in the traditions and customs of the region. “The tunes I created came after understanding these customs, and I’m glad the director liked my work,” Sundar says. He added, “This story allowed me to invent a new genre, exploring fresh musical territories.” The soundtrack features songs composed in different styles and languages, with lyrics written by Sudheer Attavar.

The film features a track by Shankar Mahadevan that blends verses from the Shiva Tandava, merging traditional elements with a modern perspective. Director Sudheer Attavar highlights that Koragajja offers a unique storyline, distinct from Kantara, despite both films being rooted in regional deities and cultural heritage. Koragajja shines a light on the 5000 Daivas of Karnataka and Kerala, with Kantara focusing on just one.

The cast includes Kabir Bedi, choreographers Sandip Soparrkar and Ganesh Acharya and South Indian actors Bhavya and Shruthi.
