Telangana is set to emerge as a leader in Green Hydrogen production with a collaborative venture between Japan’s Yamanashi Green Hydrogen Company and the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu who handles Energy also, had announced plans to establish large-scale green hydrogen plants and battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Telangana during his visit to Japan.
Bhatti, along with a delegation that included Special Chief Secretary of Finance Ramakrishna Rao, Energy Secretary Ronald Ross and SCCL CMD N. Balaram, visited Yamanashi’s research and development centre, located 100 km away from Tokyo.
The Deputy CM observed cutting-edge green hydrogen production technology and discussed potential collaborations with Yamanashi’s scientists and executives. Yamanashi, Japan’s pioneering power-to-gas company, has developed a process that uses solar energy to electrolyze water splitting it into hydrogen and oxygen. This Green Hydrogen can be used for a variety of applications like powering fuel cells, running industrial boilers and cars.
Chief Engineer Kunigi explained that the entire process is powered by solar energy, making the hydrogen produced entirely eco-friendly. Impressed by Yamanashi’s solutions, Bhatti called for immediate preparations to set up similar Green Hydrogen plants in Telangana. He emphasized the state’s abundant water resources and ideal conditions for solar energy production, making it
a prime location for Green Hydrogen. He expressed confidence that Telangana could soon become a hub for Green Hydrogen in India, with plans to supply the eco-friendly fuel to fertilizer factories, the Road Transport Corporation (RTC) and other industries.
During his visit, Bhatti also inspected Yamanashi’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which stores excess solar energy generated during the day for later use.
He noted that implementing this technology would benefit Telangana’s solar energy initiatives, particularly the 245 MW solar plants currently operated by SCCL. Plans are already underway to expand solar capacity by an additional 1,000 MW.
He proposed a joint venture with Yamanashi to introduce both Green Hydrogen plants and BESS technology in Telangana. Yamanashi officials responded positively, expressing interest in discussions to develop this partnership.
With these initiatives, Telangana is positioning itself as a key player in India’s renewable energy landscape, aiming to lead the nation in Green Hydrogen production and sustainable energy storage.
