Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Executive Officer J Syamala Rao has strongly refuted the allegations made by former TTD Trust Board Chairman Bhumana Karunakara Reddy regarding the reported deaths of 100 cows at the TTD Goshala. He described the accusations as “baseless” and intended to tarnish the image of the revered institution, thereby hurting the sentiments of millions of devotees across the world.
Speaking to media persons at the TTD Administrative Building in Tirupati on Monday, the EO clarified that comprehensive reforms have been underway in TTD operations under the direct instructions of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu since June 2024. These reforms, he said, are transforming Tirumala into a more transparent and pilgrim-friendly spiritual centre.
On the matter of cattle deaths at the Sri Venkateswara (SV) Goshala, the EO presented data and video evidence from a TTD Vigilance Report covering the period from March 2021 to March 2024. The report cited several irregularities, including unhygienic fodder, illegal tender processes, and efforts to conceal cattle deaths. He stressed that most of the cow deaths were due to natural causes such as age and illness, with many of the animals donated in fragile condition.
“In 2024 alone, 179 cows died. Between January and March 2025, there were 43 deaths due to age and disease. During the same period, 59 calves were born, which reflects the active care being provided,” the EO said.
He criticised the previous board for failing to act on such irregularities during their tenure.
The EO noted that corrective action commenced only after the appointment of a new Director for SV Goshala, and that efforts are underway to address previous lapses. He questioned the sincerity of the former chairman, stating, “If they were genuinely concerned for the cattle, they should have acted during their own tenure.”
Highlighting other reforms, the EO said the quality of Srivari Laddus and Annaprasadams has improved considerably. Inefficient officials were transferred, and middlemen eliminated through IT-enabled transparency in Seva, Darshan tickets, and accommodation allotments.
He also revealed past instances of corruption, including the use of adulterated ghee in laddu preparation, and a donor fraudulently supplying substandard organic products worth Rs 5 crore, while misusing donor privileges worth Rs 25 crore. These contracts have since been cancelled, and the suppliers blacklisted.
“Today, devotees are highly satisfied with our services. We remain committed to safeguarding the sanctity and sentiments of pilgrims through continuous reforms,” EO Syamala Rao concluded.
JEO Veerabrahmam, Deputy Forest Officer SV Goshala Director Srinivasulu, and VGO Vigilance Officer Ramkumar were also present at the press briefing.
